Back Pain Q & A

Why do I have back pain?

Your lower spine, also known as the lumbar spine, supports most of your body’s weight during normal daily activities, such as walking, standing, running, and even sitting. Because your lower back must carry so much weight and is responsible for moving your body in many different directions, about 80% of women and men in the United States have an episode of lower back pain at some point in their lives. You’re more likely to develop back pain if you’re overweight or engage in manual labor.

Though back pain is common, that doesn’t mean it’s normal or that you have to live with it. When you come to Spring Creek Chiropractic & Massage, Dr. Hennen first determines the source or sources of your pain through a physical examination and diagnostic tests, when necessary.

What causes back pain?

Lower back pain is caused by damage to any number of structures in and around your lumbar spine and pelvic bones. Common causes of acute and chronic pain include:

  • Slipped or damaged vertebral disc
  • Subluxations (misalignments) of vertebrae
  • Strains and sprains
  • Torn or damaged ligaments
  • Pinched nerves
  • Poor posture or spinal irregularities
  • Osteoporosis or arthritis
  • Hairline fractures

To get to the root of your back pain, Dr. Hennen may order on-site low-radiation digital X-rays. Once he knows what’s causing your pain, he comes up with a custom-designed treatment plan.

How do chiropractors treat back pain?

Dr. Hennen and his team at Spring Creek Chiropractic & Massage focus on healing the underlying sources of your pain, rather than just treating the symptoms. Your customized treatment plan may contain lifestyle recommendations as well as supportive and corrective therapies, such as:

  • Weight loss and nutrition recommendations
  • Massage therapy to relax muscles, alleviate pain, and stimulate circulation
  • Manual or instrumental chiropractic manipulations to straighten your spine
  • Far-infrared sauna treatments to detoxify injured area and increase circulation
  • Acupressure treatments to alleviate pain and stimulate blood flow
  • Hot and cold therapy to stimulate circulation
  • Physical therapy to correct posture
  • Cox® Technic flexion distraction to decompress and straighten the spine
  • E-STIM (electrical stimulation) to block nerve pain signals

You may need a combination of therapies to alleviate your pain. To prevent or manage chronic pain, Dr. Hennen may recommend regular chiropractic and other treatments. He also offers CBD tinctures and body balms for muscle relaxation and pain relief.
