Headaches Q & A

About one in six Americans and one in five American women experience at least one headache in a three‐month period. The reasons behind headaches are almost as diverse as the people who get them. Among the approximately 150 different types of headaches, the most common are:

  • Tension headaches: caused by tight muscles and stress
  • Cluster headaches: intense pain behind the eyes that happens multiple times in a short period
  • Sinus headaches: inflammation and pain in sinuses behind the forehead, nose, or cheeks
  • Post-traumatic headaches: pain after a head injury due to accident, collision, or fall
  • Exercise headaches: occur after exercise or sex
  • Hormone headaches: triggered by menstruation, hormonal therapy, or menopause
  • Migraine headaches: chronic, debilitating headaches that may be accompanied by flashes of light and  other sensory alterations

You might also get a headache if you suffer a stroke or have high blood pressure.

How do I know if I have migraines?

Not all chronic or recurring headaches are migraines. Migraines are a specific type of headache that are usually accompanied by a variety of other symptoms, including changes in sight, smell, and taste. Symptoms that could accompany or precede migraines include:

  • Auras (seeing flashes of light)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sensitivity to smells, tastes, light, and sound

You may have migraines if you’ve had at least five headaches that lasted for 4-72 hours without treatment.

How do chiropractors treat headaches and migraines?

In most cases, headaches and migraines are caused totally or partially by misalignments in the vertebrae of your spine. These misalignments are called subluxations. Subluxations stop your body from functioning optimally and may cause clenching in your muscles, slowed circulation, and other problems that contribute to your headache or migraine pain.

Dr. Hennen custom-designs a treatment plan that addresses all of the causes of your headache pain. Some therapies may include:

  • Manual and instrumental chiropractic manipulations
  • Spinal decompression and straightening with Cox® Technic flexion distraction
  • Massage to relax muscles, alleviate pain, and stimulate circulation
  • Far-infrared sauna treatments to heal tissues and increase circulation
  • Acupressure treatments to stop pain and stimulate blood flow
  • E-STIM (electrical stimulation) to block nerve pain
  • Nutrition and supplements to support tissues
