Infrared Sauna Q & A

What is an infrared sauna?

Infrared saunas use the restorative power of far-infrared light to gently heat your body at a comfortable temperature—just 130 to 150 degrees, as opposed to the uncomfortable 200 degrees of the traditional dry sauna. You can relax and breathe normally as your body heats up to therapeutic levels during your 30-minute session.

What is infrared light?

Far-infrared light is a type of light that falls on the opposite end of the light spectrum from ultraviolet (UV) light. Like UV light, we can’t see far-infrared light. Unlike UV light, however, far-infrared is safe and even promotes health.

How does far-infrared light work?

Spring Creek Chiropractic & Massage’s Sunlighten Signature II far-infrared sauna uses patented Solocarbon heat technology to send energy into your body, penetrating your tissues to a  depth of about an inch beneath the surface of your skin. As your skin and tissues absorb the light, your core body temperature rises by about 2-3 degrees, which is similar to the temperature increase you experience after exercising. That increase in temperature raises your heart rate and increases circulation, and this, in turn, makes you sweat.

What are the benefits of infrared saunas?

Infrared sauna sessions have some of the same benefits as exercise, due to sweating and an increased heart rate. However, far-infrared light also triggers therapeutic effects at the cellular level. Some benefits you can expect are:

  • Pain relief
  • Skin detoxification
  • Relaxation
  • Improved circulation
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Better sleep
  • Weight loss
  • Improved skin tone and texture
  • Less acne and fewer scars
  • Accelerated wound healing

Detoxifying with infrared light strengthens your immune system and optimizes biochemical processes.

Can I use infrared saunas for sports recovery?

If you’re an athlete or weekend warrior, infrared saunas help relax your muscles and promote detoxification after a heavy workout or game. Its therapeutic effects also help you heal faster and more completely from common sports injuries. Taking a sauna before a workout also helps warm up your muscles, tendons, and ligaments to reduce the chance of an injury.
