Massage Therapy Q & A

What is massage therapy?

Massage therapy is a touch-based, soft-tissue treatment designed to alleviate pain, promote relaxation and healing, and improve overall well-being. Massage is one of the oldest treatment modalities still in use. References to massage exist in 4,000-year-old Chinese medicine texts and in the ancient Greek medical practitioner Hippocrates’ writings, too.

What are some types of massage?

Many different cultures evolved their own types of massage therapies, which may involve touching patients with hands, elbows, forearms, or even feet. Modern health practitioners developed new kinds of specific massage techniques to address different types of pain and dysfunction. At Spring Creek Chiropractic & Massage, the licensed massage therapists offer a number of massage therapies, including:

Sports massage

Sports massage targets muscle groups used in athletics. Massage helps heal injuries, alleviates pain, and can be used to prepare for or recover from a game. Massage also makes you more flexible.

Deep tissue massage

Deep tissue massage is targeted to the deep layers of your muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Deep tissue massage is good for addressing spots of tension and pain.

Prenatal massage

Prenatal massage helps alleviate the joint pain, swelling, and discomfort that accompanies pregnancy. Your therapist uses pillows to support your body to make you more comfortable.

Lymphatic massage

Lymphatic drain massage increases the circulation of a special fluid in your body called lymph, which helps remove bacteria and other toxins. Your massage therapist uses a light touch to move the lymph fluid throughout your body.

Trigger point massage

Trigger point massage targets knots of muscular tension and pain. Your therapist presses deeply into the knots to loosen them and release pain.

Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation

Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation is a type of stretching therapy. Your therapist stretches your muscle as much as possible and holds it for a few seconds to increase range of motion.

Acupressure is a form of Chinese massage in which your practitioner exerts pressure on special points that lie along the meridians of your body. Acupressure is used to remove blocks so that energy circulates freely.

Regular massage also optimizes well-being. If you’re an athlete, massages help you avoid injury and heal more quickly if you are injured. Your Spring Creek Chiropractic massage therapist tailors the right type of massage treatments for your needs.
